The bass is the bridge between rhythm and harmony — it's what makes people move. A good bass feels solid, stays in tune, and sits in the mix without fighting. Active vs passive, J vs P, 4 vs 5 string — these aren't better/worse questions, they're fit questions.
P-Bass (Precision): Split single-coil pickup. Thick, punchy, sits perfectly in a rock mix. One sound, but it's THE sound. If you only record one bass track, it's probably a P-Bass with flats.
J-Bass (Jazz): Two single-coil pickups. More tonal options (blend knob), brighter, more articulate. Cuts through busy mixes. The funk machine. Slimmer neck than a P-Bass.
PJ Bass: P pickup in the middle, J pickup at the bridge. The best of both worlds for many players.
Passive: No battery, pure magnetic signal. P-Bass/J-Bass territory. Warmer, more organic, foolproof. Active: Built-in preamp (9V battery). Higher output, onboard EQ (bass/mid/treble boost/cut). More tonal control, better for slapping, modern metal, and 5+ strings. Battery dies = no sound.
4 string (EADG): The standard. Lighter, slimmer neck, every bass line ever written. 5 string (BEADG): Adds a low B. Useful for modern gospel, metal, pop (synth bass lines in Eb/D). Heavier, wider neck, more muting discipline needed. Don't buy a 5 unless you have a reason — the low B isn't 'extra notes,' it's a different approach.
34" (Long Scale): Standard Fender. The reference point. 30" (Short Scale): Mustang, Hofner. Easier to play, lighter, rounder tone. Great for smaller hands, guitarists doubling on bass, and vintage vibes. 35"+ (Extra Long): Common on 5-strings for a tighter low B. Dingwall multiscale (fanned frets) takes this further.
Budget ($100-300 used): Squier Affinity/CV, Yamaha TRBX, Ibanez GSR. Solid starters.
Mid-Range ($350-700 used): Fender Player, Sire Marcus Miller, G&L Tribute. Pro quality without the price.
Premium ($800-2000+ used): Fender American, Music Man StingRay, Rickenbacker, Spector. The classics.
