An acoustic guitar doesn't hide behind amplifiers and effects — it's just wood, strings, and you. The body shape, tonewood combination, and construction determine everything about the sound. A great acoustic is inspiring to pick up; a bad one collects dust.
Dreadnought (Martin D-style): Big, loud, boomy bass. The standard. Great for strumming, bluegrass, flatpicking. Can be boomy when recording.
Grand Auditorium (Taylor x14): Balanced across bass/mid/treble. The Swiss Army knife — does everything well. Most versatile recording shape.
Concert/OM (Orchestra Model): Smaller body, focused midrange. Fingerstyle heaven. Less bass, more articulation.
Parlor: Smallest, most portable. Blues box. Midrange character, limited volume.
Spruce top: Bright, articulate, opens up with age. Most common. Mahogany top: Warm, dry, midrange-focused. Blues and roots music. Cedar top: Warmest, responds to light touch. Fingerstyle. Rosewood back/sides: Rich overtones, deep bass. Mahogany back/sides: Dry, punchy, focused. Maple back/sides: Bright, projects well in a band mix. Recording favorite.
Solid top: The soundboard is a single piece of wood. Vibrates more freely = better tone that improves with age. The minimum you should accept.
All solid: Top, back, and sides all solid wood. Best tone, most responsive, most affected by humidity changes. Laminate back/sides: Plywood layers. Less resonant, but tougher and less humidity-sensitive. Fine for beginners and travel guitars.
If you'll plug in, look for a quality preamp system (Fishman, LR Baggs, Taylor ES). Undersaddle piezo pickups are standard — they work but can sound quacky. Higher-end systems blend an internal mic with the piezo for more natural sound. A guitar without electronics + a good aftermarket pickup is often better than a cheap factory system.
Budget ($100-300 used): Yamaha FG/FS series — the undisputed value kings. Seagull S6, Recording King. Solid tops at entry prices.
Mid-Range ($400-900 used): Martin Road Series, Taylor 100/200 series, Eastman. All-solid options appear here.
American/Pro ($1000-3000+ used): Martin Standard, Taylor 300+, Gibson acoustics. Heirloom instruments.
